INSOMNIA INFORMATION SPOTLIGHT
American College of Physicians (ACP) Issue Guideline that Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia Should Be First Line Treatment for Chronic Insomnia (ACP Online, May 3, 2016)
Help for Middle of the Night Insomnia (Wall Street Journal, June 27, 2016)

Frustrated with Your Sleep?  Tired of Taking Pills?
Along with diet and exercise, a growing body of research suggests that sleeping well on a regular basis is an important part of meeting our life goals and staying healthy.  Dr. Edward Haraburda opened Psychological Sleep Services in 2012 to offer people in central Ohio a research-based treatment for insomnia that doesn't involve medication.  This approach, called cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia, or CBT-I for short, has been effectively treating insomnia for years and is endorsed as the treatment of choice (over medication) for adults with chronic insomnia by the American College of Physicians.  According to the Mayo Clinic, “unlike pills, CBT-I addresses the underlying causes of insomnia rather than just relieving symptoms.”

While people vary significantly in how they sleep, you may have insomnia if you often:
•    Take longer than 20-30 minutes to fall asleep
•    Are awake for more than 30 minutes during the night
•    Feel unrefreshed when you wake in the morning

Ways in Which Psychological Sleep Services Provides Care
Treating insomnia only
  • For those who have no other significant behavioral health issues, treatment tends to be a short-term intervention, typically lasting from 6-10 sessions.  The presence of other issues that need treatment such as anxiety can increase the amount of treatment an individual needs.
  • For those who are receiving care from other behavioral health provider, Dr. Haraburda serves as a sleep consultant and can collaborate with other provider.

Treating insomnia and other behavioral health issues at the same time

  • Often other issues such as anxiety and depression contribute to insomnia and vice versa.

Treating behavioral health issues in individuals without insomnia
  • In addition to being an expert in the treatment of insomnia, Dr. Haraburda is a licensed psychologist with over 16 years of experience helping individuals address a wide range of other behavioral health issues such as anxiety, stress, depression and substance abuse.  His treatment approach involves helping clients develop insight into their issues through a thorough assessment and using a wide range of psychotherapies and mindfulness-based approaches grounded in research to achieve their personal goals.

Dr. Haraburda treats insomnia in a wide range of adults.  His experiences with how insomnia can linger even after successful treatment of other behavioral health issues led him to learn about CBT-I and eventually to open Psychological Sleep Services.  CBT-I is a specialized form of psychotherapy and for those utilizing insurance, it is paid as part of an individual’s behavioral health benefits.

Struggling to sleep at night often leads to struggling to stay awake or function during the day.  Insomnia is a particularly frustrating and confusing disorder, in part because it clearly appears to involve both our mind and our body.  Despite preferring to sleep naturally, many people turn to medication for sleep issues.  Fortunately there are specialists who treat sleep issues such as insomnia without medication by addressing the behavioral, psychological, and physiological factors that interfere with sleep - this specialty area is called Behavioral Sleep Medicine.

One of the few behavioral sleep medicine experts in Ohio, Edward Haraburda, Ph.D. of Psychological Sleep Services was trained by psychologists from the sleep centers at Stanford University and the University of Pennsylvania.  Using cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia and a number of other evidence-based treatments, he has successfully helped a wide range of clients get the quality sleep they deserve.

BENEFITS OF SEEING A BEHAVIORAL SLEEP SPECIALIST: CBT-I delivered by Dr. Haraburda is significantly more effective than trying to follow a list of tips on sleeping better for the following important reasons.

•    You receive a thorough assessment of the many factors that contribute to unsatisfactory sleep.

•    You will receive a personalized plan to improve your sleep based on your unique circumstances.

•    You will receive support in implementing changes by someone highly trained in behavioral change in general, and sleep in particular.

A recent study published in the journal SLEEP (2016: Vol 39, No. 1) showed "superior performance of face-to-face treatment to online treatment" for insomnia.  While some people can benefit from following tips on sleeping better or using an online program, the highest level of care is considered to be face-to-face treatment with a behavioral sleep specialist.  In addition to the customized expert support such a provider can offer, their behavioral health skills allow them to help you address other issues such as anxiety, depression and substance use that may contribute to sleep and other life difficulties.
